Ten Years of Textiles - TFAM

The Textile and Fibre Artists of Manitoba (TFAM) is an inclusive group of diverse Canadian artists established in 2017, whose foundation rests on the four pillars of education, networking, exhibiting, and promoting fibre as an art form. Drawn together by the desire to create, support and learn from each other, TFAM’s membership includes emerging and established artists, as well as beginners starting out on their creative journey. In 2027, as an opportunity to celebrate the tenth-year anniversary of the inception of the group, TFAM has decided to highlight and embrace the work of its members.

With the option of a variety of sizes and an open palette regarding techniques, materials and styles, Ten Years of Textiles promises to be a unique snapshot in time for this dynamic and diverse group of fibre artists.

The details …

  • The use of a technique learnt in the last ten years, while a member of TFAM will be encouraged.

  • All genres, colours, styles, and edging will be acceptable including a hard-sided finish; no glass covering the artwork will be accepted.

  • TFAM would be interested in facilitating a workshop at Prairie Fusion Gallery sometime during the run of the exhibit.

Artist Bio: The Textile and Fibre Artists of Manitoba (TFAM) is a non-profit fibre arts group founded in September 2017. The current membership count is 70 members from urban and rural areas of Manitoba and Canada. TFAM has been involved in numerous Events, Workshops, Presentations & Receptions, Meetings, Newsletters and Exhibits including Manitoba Moments, ICE, River, Shifting Perspective, JOY, Textural Dimension and Dual Impressions, as well as a member show, Five Years of Fibre

TFAM supports its members through monthly ZOOM Meetings, online and in-person workshops, two focused POD groups (Slow Stitching and Felting), educational presentations, and biennial three-day retreats.

Collaboration with groups such as the Manitoba Craft Council and Manitoba Fibre Festival allow TFAM members to connect within a vibrant fibre and craft community. The opportunity to give back is important to the organization through the donation of funds raised from the sale of member-created postcards.

TFAM’s 2020 COVID Fibre Art Journal Challenge Exhibit has been donated to the Manitoba Museum as part of their permanent collection.

Artist Statement: A decade is defined by a period of ten years. Depending on one’s point of view, this can be either a short or very long stretch of time, full of stability or great change. When considering the time frame between 2018 and 2027, ten years is a decade filled with just about everything, including the coalescence of an enthusiastic and determined group of Manitoba fibre artists. The formation of the Textile and Fibre Artists of Manitoba has enriched the lives and creativity of all those who have been a member, either locally or across Canada. Inspiring, supporting and challenging each other, TFAM continues to fulfill its objectives of exhibiting, education, networking and promoting fibre as an art form, all while encouraging friendship and a sense of community. The exhibit Ten Years of Textile is a collection of fibre art reflecting upon the uniqueness and originality of the participating artists within TFAM, and the journey taken throughout the years.
